37-year-old Ren Lowe spent most of her life pursuing a career in music, but the truth is ever since she was a child, she has always loved to write. That love has came full circle as she writes a series of children’s books with her eight-year-old daughter Kameryn Lowe called, “My Magical Brown Unicorn.”

“I wanted to write books with representation, diversity, and inclusion… I wanted to make sure that the little girl in me, was represented because this is my dream. This is my dream since I was a little girl and I get to venture out and be as creative as I want to be. So I wanted to make sure that I saw myself in books and I want to make sure that my daughter sees herself in books. So I said I’m going to write a book about a brown unicorn,” Lowe said.

During the pandemic, Lowe was able to dive into her passion for writing and founded Royaltee Press to become a self-published author. At some point, one of Kameryn’s teachers brought to her attention that she wasn’t doing so well on her reading assignments because she was struggling with reading comprehension. So to address this, Lowe made it a point for her daughter to practice by coming up with her own stories. After noticing her daughter’s love for unicorns, she asked if she wanted to co-write My Magical Brown Unicorn.

“She really is my partner. With the books that she helps me write, she literally helps me write. I [would write] the story and I would read it to her. And I would say, ‘How would you say this?’ or ‘Is there something else that you want me to say, instead of this?’ and she’ll be like, ‘Well, can we put this?’ or ‘Let’s take this sentence out and let’s add this,’” Lowe said. “And when it came to naming the characters, and the character designs… even when it came to their features, and how she wanted them to look, and her own character, when the illustrator would come back with the sketches, she will let me know I want this to be this color. And I would ask her, where would you like to go? Where would you imagine yourself being, and she gave me these ideas. And I took those ideas, and I would incorporate them.”

For Lowe, it was also crucial for her books to center Black characters. She noticed that there is still a need for books that help Black and Brown children be proud of who they are and wanted to drive this lesson home with Kameryn.

“There’s people that might not be happy with being Black. So if we write books with Black people, they’ll probably feel happier about their skin color,” Kameryn said.

Another essential part for Lowe is teaching her children about some inequities when it comes to education. In response to this, Royaltee Press is in the process of creating a fundraiser to give away crates of books to make education for children more accessible.

“She really understands that everybody does not have the luxuries and the privileges, and [that some] parents don’t have the privileges of being able to buy books. Even if a book is only $8.99 that can be a big deal for someone. Everybody doesn’t have the privilege and the luxury to be able to get in the car and go to the library even though we have free resources. Everyone doesn’t have the internet to be able to download books. So even in that sense, where we have so many resources, there are still a lot of children who don’t have access to those resources,” Lowe said.

Kameryn hopes to continue working on books with her mom. She’s busy writing her first fairy tale adventure book and continues to perform read-alouds at the Children’s Museum in Atlanta. Meanwhile, Lowe has taken her writing to the next level by helping other self-publishing authors through her publishing agency Brown Unicorn publishing.

“The best part about writing books with mommy is that I get to spend more time with her,” Kameryn said.
