Healthy Scalp
Throughout his life, Garrick Wade has dealt with seborrheic dermatitis on his scalp. According to Medical News Today, it’s a skin condition that causes a discolored, scaly rash, usually in areas with lots of oil glands. The article also stated that it is common on darker skin tones, especially in the Black community.
Wade would frequently visit a dermatologist, but even after recommendations, he would see the condition come back. It wasn’t until COVID hit, and he didn’t have much access to his dermatologist, that he began doing his own research. Through that research, he started making his own hair products in his home kitchen in 2020.
“I really wanted to focus on the scalp,” said Wade when making his products.
Wade didn’t plan on turning his products into a business until one day his friend, and roommate at the time, asked to use some oil, so Wade shared some of his homemade oil with him. Unbeknownst to Wade, his friend began regularly using the product so much that he asked Wade to make some more for him. From there, that friend shared Wade’s product with other friends, who then began requesting the products too. After much encouragement from his friends, he decided to sit down, talk with God, and create Bëhold Natural Essentials, a Black and male-owned natural hair care brand based in Atlanta.
Bëhold Natural Essentials uses natural ingredients to keep the scalp hydrated and healthy.
Wade credits God for giving him the clarity and vision to go forth with Bëhold Natural Essentials. In fact, the brand’s name is inspired by the bible verse Isaiah 43:19. And with a background as a television producer, working in real estate, and helping others launch their brands, Wade said he’s always had an entrepreneurial mindset.
“Don’t ever box yourself in. Don’t ever think that because you have done many things previously that you can’t continue to try new things,” said Wade. “Don’t let your mind get clouded with what other people are going to think.”
Since its launch, Bëhold Natural Essentials has grown from two products to seven, including Rosemary + Mint Scalp and Hair Spray that can be used daily. Wade said his products are not FDA approved and recommends pairing his products with medicated shampoos and conditions; all his products are antifungal.
Support Keeps Hope Alive
Running a self-funded business is never easy, but Wade has found solace through the constant support, especially from repeat customers. At one point, there was a woman who was ordering at least 10 of each product per month. He went from just receiving reviews from friends to receiving reviews from people he’s never met before. He draws on those moments as motivation to continue building his business.
“They actually trust the business. It must be working,” he said.
When asked where he hopes to see the business go, he said it’s all in God’s hands. Maybe his products will be sold in salons, or maybe someone will want to buy the company off his hands. Whatever it may be, Wade is down for the journey.
“Be prepared to do the work [and] go after what you want,” said Wade.
