From Childhood Need To A Movement

Since 2016, the I Owe Youth Foundation has donated over 100 free prom dresses and tuxes to Milwaukee youth to meet a need Founder Jessica Johnson once had herself. Johnson said she’s been on her own since a young age, and she always had dreams of attending prom. When it came time to get her attire, she was helped by a woman who paid for everything. Johnson never forgot that kindness, and now she’s giving back in the same way.

Each year, Johnson’s nonprofit hosts an annual prom drive for Milwaukee youth to receive free prom attire.

“It’s always been important to be of service…I have always been a person of service, so it really wasn’t outside of my norm,” Johnson said about starting her nonprofit.

Johnson doesn’t just give away things; she creates experiences. I Owe Youth Foundation’s annual prom drives are set up like a store, allowing scholars to get a free shopping experience for whatever they may need for prom, including shoes, purses, and accessories. Johnson treats the event like a party by including a DJ and free food.

Six scholars registered for the first drive, but only one scholar showed up. Now, the nonprofit services 20-40 families a year.

As we get closer to 2026, Johnson is preparing for 10 years of giving as she gears up for the nonprofit’s annual prom drive on March 14, 2026. This initiative is open to Milwaukee and the surrounding area high school students. She’s currently collecting clothing and monetary donations.

Johnson emphasized that the prom drive is open to young men as well, with a variety of tuxes to choose from.

She also credits her adoptive family for the positive energy they brought into her life.

“I just saw kindness all around me when it relates to that family,” said Johnson.

More than A Prom Drive

Along with the annual prom drive, I Owe Youth Foundation focuses on empowering youth through mentorship. The nonprofit provides workforce development, resume building, and other skills to prepare the youth for the real world.

According to its site, I Owe Youth Foundation is a certified provider with the Milwaukee County Children’s Long-Term Support (CLTS) Program, which expands its ability to serve local youth and families. The I Owe Youth Foundation is also building out a curriculum.

As she continues to work with youth, Johnson said it’s important to give grace and have patience.

“We have to see them for them,” said Johnson. “They often feel like they’re not heard…so it’s beneficial to give them an opportunity to ask questions.”
