Coming Home
Emmitt James moved to Los Angeles in 2015 to dive further into his music career. In December 2023, he came back to Milwaukee to be with family, save money, and eventually move back to L.A. Those plans changed once he saw how much the city had grown.
“I kind of re-fell in love with Milwaukee…it appears to be more vibrant…and people are pouring back into the arts scene here,” said James. “It’s encouraging. It feels good to be here when it’s happening.”
Inspired by some of his friends in Los Angeles who hosted a show with a lot of band members, James decided to do the same in the city. What started as a one-time event to give back to the community has turned into an annual free fundraiser concert.
The third annual Emmitt James Big Band BBQ is back, and this time they’re donating 50% of the sales to Your Move MKE, a Milwaukee nonprofit that aims to break the cycles of poverty through healing and positive Hip Hop initiatives. Each year, James picks a different local organization to donate to. This year’s event will be held today, August 23, 2025, starting at 7 p.m. CST at Third Space Brewing in Milwaukee.
The fundraiser will include a build-your-own s’more bar, raffles, prizes, and a youth showcase by Your Move MKE. It is a free event, but VIP tickets are available for purchase, which include a Big Band BBQ t-shirt, VIP seating, and first dibs on food.
Supporting Local Artists
As a musician himself, James centers the show on the big band, The Lemon Pepper Steppers, which is made up of local artists. The first year featured a 13-piece band, the following year a 22-piece band, and this year a 25-piece band.
Unlike past years, James expanded his team to include hiring an MC, so he can focus on performing and not managing.
“I do the event every year because I care about Milwaukee. I think the youth is the future…that’s what the event is all about,” said James.
