The 3rd Annual CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship Selects Adjua Nsoroma

Giving Back to the Community

Aside from reporting on positive news in the Milwaukee community and around the country, Carvd N Stone is dedicated to investing in the achievement, growth, and aspirations of fellow creatives like scholarships and grants. The CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship was started by Steve Hintz, to honor his father the late writer, reporter, and publisher, Martin Hintz after his passing in 2020.

Hintz was known for his love of travel, writing, and journalism. He had served as a reporter for the Milwaukee Sentinel as well as authored over 100 books, sealing his legacy as a master behind words.

Each year the scholarship requires an 800-word essay responding to a theme, the applicant must be a Milwaukee resident, and between the ages of 17-29 years old. This 2024 theme was: “What lessons have you learned while traveling that you’ve implemented in your daily life and why?”.

Adjua Nsoroma was selected as the 2024 CNS Loren Martin Hintz Travel Writing Scholarship recipient and was awarded a $1,000 check.

The news came to Nsoroma via email, bringing the 25-year-old a delightful surprise.

“I was just really excited. I never really expected to win,” said Nsoroma. “I never entered any type of writing contest, I normally keep my writing to myself.”

A Multi-faceted Artist with Funds

Nsoroma is a person of many talents. She enjoys spending her time writing stories, poetry, and journaling but also loves to take a more hands-on approach to her creative ventures. She is a visual artist using her talents to paint and is known to be a talented seamstress among her family and friends.

“I just like to work with my hands a lot, and let out my feelings internally,” said Nsoroma.

The soft-spoken artist is a 2022 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she received her bachelor’s in textile design.

The award from the scholarship will be used to help purchase materials and supplies to sustain Nsoroma’s creative endeavors.

The Winning Essay

In Nsoroma’s essay, she detailed her time spent in Jamaica, bonding with local communities, people, and families. The bonds she’s created made her someone that local children on the island and youth could look up to as a role model. This taught her important lessons that she carries with her as she navigates motherhood.

“From small children to preteens, they followed me with wide-eyed curiosity, eager to learn and explore together. Our daily check-ins and moments spent braiding each other’s hair and cooking nurturing meals fostered a sense of community and belonging that transcended cultural boundaries. As I navigate the joys and challenges of motherhood in Milwaukee, I draw upon these experiences as a reminder of the importance of nurturing relationships and fostering a supportive community for my own family,” Nsoroma wrote in her essay.

The lessons learned in Jamaica are still carried by Nsoroma as she navigates her life and relationships in Milwaukee.
