Invest Fest 2022 brought out legend Tyler Perry for a sit-down interview with Earn Your Leisure (EYL) Founders Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings. 12,000 people filled the room to capture a glance into Perry’s mind.
Perry is a billionaire that never changed his vision up to make a dollar. According to Perry, he’s walked away from multiple deals in order to stay true to who he is.
The History of the “House of Payne” Show
“House of Payne” has been on air since 2006, but it wouldn’t have been the TV show it is if Perry didn’t walk away from the original deal. Perry was offered a slot on a national network but they wanted to change the entirety of the show, down to not being allowed to say the word “Jesus”. He knew this wasn’t his vision so he walked away. Years later, House of Payne is still going with over 400 episodes.
According to Perry, the House of Payne actors have made millions of dollars over the years.
He said it’s about building from where you are and providing the best work that you can at that moment. Perry also makes sure to look for people that can fit those visions.
“You have to be open to working with everybody,” he said.
Dealing with Backlash
Perry was asked how does he deal with the backlash and haters. He said haters are going to be just that, but it’s your job to say nothing.
Perry added that those who are successful are too busy actually working to worry about someone else.
“The hardest thing to do with haters is to keep your mouth shut when people are talking mess,” said Perry who’s received a lot of criticism over his career.
Tyler Perry Studios
By Perry avoiding the naysayers, he has gone from being homeless to owning Tyler Perry Studios, which is changing the world of film.
Tyler Perry Studios is 330 acres and resides on the historic grounds of the former Fort McPherson army base. The major motion picture studio is one of the largest production facilities in the country, which showcases 40 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, 12 purpose-built sound stages, 200 acres of green space, and more.
According to the site, Tyler Perry Studios Fort McPherson is the fourth expansion in Perry’s creative empire.
Just like Steve Harvey mentioned, for Perry, it’s all about ownership. Perry said with the purchase of his studios, he is now able to create how he wants and enjoy it.
Perry had a good time on stage and told EYL to prepare for greatness because they’re already there.
“As great as this is, there’s more,” he said.
