New York Brings Out the Stars

Carvd N Stone took to Regal Theaters Times Square on April 8, 2025, for an advanced screening of Amazon MGM Studios and JuVee Productions’ G20, whichis Prime Video’s new original film directed by Patricia Riggen. The film features Viola Davis as U.S. Madam President Danielle Sutton.

Before the film started, some of its stars came out to greet attendees with a few words about their latest project. Alongside Davis stood Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, and Ramon Rodriguez. Davis’s husband, Julius Tennon, accompanied her as well. Other star-studded attendees included social media influencers Madame Joyce, Denzel Deion, and Fannita Leggett.

Davis is more known for “serious” roles like Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder and Rose Maxon in Fences. Lately, she can be seen as a hero playing roles like Nanisca in The Woman King and now Madam President Danielle Sutton with G20.

“I just want people to believe that I could be the hero in the center of a movie,” said Davis.

Diving into the Film

In this action-packed thriller, Sutton attends the annual G20 summit in South Africa—a high-stakes gathering of world leaders focused on global trade and economic policy. When a group of crypto terrorists, led by mastermind Rutledge (Anthony Starr), seeks to crumble the world economy, Sutton embarks on a journey to restore order with the help of Agent Manny Ruiz (Ramon Rodriguez).

Sutton is an Iraq War veteran, wife, and mother of two who bears the literal weight of the world on her shoulders. The first family consists of First Gentleman Derek Sutton (Anthony Anderson), a ride-or-die who aims to protect his family at all costs; First Daughter Serena Sutton (Marsai Martin), a rebellious teenager with a knack for technology; and First Son Demetrius Sutton (Christopher Farrar), who leans on the guidance of his sister while maintaining a courageous demeanor of his own.

G20 offers escapism while spotlighting real issues, with Davis’s portrayal of Sutton highlighting how Black women are often overlooked despite working twice as hard as their white counterparts.

This is a classic hero-saves-the-day action picture. Although the film has a serious plot, there were many goofy moments to enjoy. It leans into the emotions of the audience, exploring themes of love, self-discovery, and tenacity. G20 was a feel-good film that left the audience on the edge of their seats, cheering and wanting more.

G20 is available on Prime Video.
