Summer Program

In the last few years, Georgia has become a major player in film production. According the Atlanta Magazine, in 2023, Georgia hosted 31 major studio feature films, 55 independent films, and 241 television productions. As the state’s film production portfolio grows, people are working to make sure the locals benefit. Event and film producer Cristina Davis Whitlow created the Atlanta nonprofit Ambassador Arts Academy to create access for Black, Brown, and underserved local youth to get careers in film, media, and the arts.

“[We are] making sure youth have access to places they can see themselves,” said Whitlow.

Ambassador Arts Academy offers year-round mentorship, hands-on training, and youth-centered programming. One of the organization’s main programs is its annual youth documentary film camp; 2025 marks four years of the camp. Whitlow said the film camp is vital for Atlanta youth after seeing how COVID-19 isolation impacted them.

The two-week summer camp is aimed at local Atlanta youth, 13-18 years old, to give them knowledge and resources to access the creative economy. The camp provides full-day instruction, meals, and mentorship from entities like Assembly Studios, Lionsgate Atlanta, and Trilith Institute.

“We want people to know these are not just hobbies,” Whitlow said.

What Youth Will Learn

The year’s camp theme is the state of the film industry and how it affects the economy. The youth will learn writing, directing, and basic camera fundamentals, and the camp will end with the youth presenting a story on screen. The program features direct instruction from filmmakers, producers, and faculty from institutions like SAE Institute Atlanta and the Savannah College of Art and Design.

“They are not sitting in one room being lectured at,” said Whitlow.

This year’s camp ambassador is actor and producer Robert C. Riley. Riley is known for his roles in Dynasty, Hit the Floor, Beyond the Gates, and Tyler Perry’s new series Divorced Sisters. Riley will speak to students, offer hands-on insight, and participate in the closing events.

“Not many people get access to the places and people we’re going to have mentor them,” she said.

The camp costs $400 this year at a discounted rate, with limited scholarships available to help cover individuals’ program fees. To sign up for the film camp, click here.
